The Central Texas Ranch & Rural Road Challenge
For property owners in expansive areas like Stampede, Oscar, Troy, and Lorena, the cost of paving hundreds or thousands of feet of road with hot-mix asphalt is often impractical. The alternative—gravel—creates continuous problems:
- Erosion: Heavy Texas downpours quickly wash gravel away, requiring constant, expensive re-grading and replenishment.
- Dust & Mud: The surface is dusty in summer and becomes a muddy, impassable mess during the rainy season.
- Vehicle Damage: Loose gravel damages tires and windshields and is hard on vehicle suspensions.
Chip sealing directly solves these issues by creating a solid, waterproof layer over your road’s base, eliminating dust and preventing washouts.
The Al’s Paving Chip Sealing Solution
With over three decades of experience paving roads in the Waco and Killeen area, we’ve perfected the Tar & Chip process specifically for Central Texas conditions. Our specialization ensures maximum aggregate retention, which means fewer loose rocks and a longer-lasting surface. This commitment to quality is part of why we are an A+ Rated Accredited Business with the BBB.
Our Chip Seal process is built on precision:
- Optimal Base Preparation: Ensuring the underlying base is compact, stable, and correctly graded for drainage is critical to a long-lasting chip seal.
- Precision Emulsion Application: We use the right grade of hot asphalt emulsion that achieves maximum adhesion with the local aggregate.
- Correct Aggregate Size: Applying a layer of clean, uniform aggregate (crushed stone) chosen for optimal locking, aesthetics, and skid resistance.
- Heavy-Duty Compaction: Using multi-ton rollers to seat the stone firmly into the asphalt layer, guaranteeing a rugged, dense, and durable surface.
Core Benefits of Al’s Paving Chip Sealing
Chip sealing is more than just asphalt and rocks; it’s a strategically engineered, multi-purpose solution for Central Texas properties.
1. Cost-Effective Paving for Long Distances
Chip sealing provides a paved, sealed surface at a fraction of the cost of traditional asphalt. This makes it the most economical choice for long driveways, private subdivision roads, and ranch access in Belton and surrounding rural communities.
2. Superior Water Resistance & Erosion Control
By applying the asphalt emulsion across the entire surface, we create a waterproof membrane that seals the underlying road base. This prevents rainwater from penetrating the foundation, drastically reducing erosion, mud, and base failure.
3. Attractive, Low-Maintenance Aesthetic
The rough texture of the stone provides excellent skid resistance and traction, making it safer than smooth asphalt in wet conditions. The rustic, natural stone look also complements ranch and rural properties beautifully, requiring less upkeep than highly maintained asphalt.
Ranch Road Near Oscar “Our ranch road near Oscar was a mess—dusty in summer, and you couldn’t drive down it after a hard rain. Al’s Paving came out and installed a chip seal road that transformed the property. It looks clean, the truck doesn’t kick up dust, and it holds up perfectly against all the heavy equipment traffic. Huge savings over an asphalt quote, too!”

Chip Sealing (Tar & Chip) Service FAQs
Loose stones are a common issue with poor chip seal jobs. We minimize this by using the correct grade of asphalt emulsion and ensuring heavy-duty compaction immediately after stone application. We also advise customers to drive slowly (under 15 MPH) for the first week to help “seat” the remaining loose stones, which can then be swept away. Our meticulous process maximizes stone retention.
Chip Seal is a significant upgrade from Gravel—it eliminates dust, erosion, and provides a stable surface. It’s often more durable than a thin asphalt overlay because the aggregate protects the binder from UV damage. While traditional, full-depth Asphalt Paving has the longest lifespan and highest weight capacity, Chip Seal offers the best balance of cost, durability, and low maintenance for long, residential-to-commercial-traffic roads.
A properly installed chip seal road by Al’s Paving typically lasts 7 to 10 years before requiring re-treatment. Maintenance is minimal; unlike asphalt, it doesn’t need regular seal coating. Re-treatment simply involves repeating the emulsion and aggregate process, which is quick and much less costly than asphalt maintenance or repair.
