Grading & Base Preparation

Proper subgrade excavation and base compaction are the foundation of every lasting surface. We cut to grade, lime stabilize heavy Blackland clay to reduce plasticity, and compact caliche or crushed limestone base in lifts. On the Killeen side where rock sits near the surface, we engineer within available depth and use local caliche for a solid, well drained base. Done right, this step prevents the movement and water damage that destroys pavement from below.

Asphalt Repair & Resurfacing

Full depth sawcut patching, pothole repair, crack sealing, and overlay resurfacing for aging driveways and commercial lots. We cut clean edges, recompact failed base, and lay fresh hot mix flush with surrounding pavement.

Seal Coating

Protective asphalt emulsion seal coat that shields pavement from UV oxidation, automotive fluid leaks, and rain intrusion. Includes hot rubberized crack filling and optional line striping for commercial lots.

East of Balcones Fault: Waco Blackland Prairie

Waco and eastern McLennan County (including Temple, Belton, Lorena, McGregor, Moffat, Whitney, Hillsboro, and China Spring) rest on Houston Black clay, the official Texas state soil and one of the most expansive vertisols in North America.

• Clay Composition: Contains 60% to 80% smectite clay with Plasticity Index (PI) ratings commonly above 50.
• Seasonal Movement: Shifts vertically by 3 to 6 inches in the upper 10 feet of soil during wet and dry cycles.
• Summer Cracking: Dry summer heat pulls moisture from undisturbed ground, opening deep fissures 2 to 4 inches wide and 18 to 24 inches deep.
• Pavement Failure Mode: Pavement fails from below. As soil contracts and expands, unengineered subgrades flex, causing severe longitudinal cracking and rutting regardless of surface quality.
• Engineering Solution: Deep subgrade excavation, lime stabilization to lower soil plasticity, heavy crushed limestone flex base compaction, and center crown grading that moves surface runoff far away from the pavement edge.

West of Balcones Fault: Killeen Lampasas Cut Plain

Killeen, Copperas Cove, Harker Heights, Gatesville, Nolanville, Clifton, Florence, Hamilton, Lampasas, Meridian, and San Saba sit west of the fault line on the Lampasas Cut Plain at the eastern margin of the Edwards Plateau.

• Shallow Bedrock: Purves and Denton silty clay series formed from limestone residuum and marl over solid limestone rock.
• Subgrade Constraint: Solid limestone bedrock is encountered within inches of the topsoil, making deep excavation impossible.
• Hydrological Challenge: Rainwater cannot percolate down into solid rock, perching underneath the subbase and softening shallow base rock under heavy vehicle axles.
• Pavement Failure Mode: Perched water trapped between impermeable rock and asphalt weakens base rock, leading to pothole delamination.
• Engineering Solution: Working within available depth, incorporating local caliche (calcareous limestone) as an ultra hard base, and establishing positive surface swale drainage rather than subsurface ditches.
